Two points about the video come to mind:

1. What was the Bataan death march?

A rather unpleasant episode during the war in the Pacific. Tens of thousands of Filipino and American POWs werde marched from one camp to another in the Philippines in 1942 and many thousands died due to cruel treatment and wanton executions by the Japanese army as well as malnutrition, dehydration and disease. 2. How does this relate to the upgrade cycle of proprietary software?

Although I admit that the comparison is quite drastic, there is some truth in it. Using proprietary software exposes companies (and to a lesser extent individuals) to a business strategy that is crucial for many makers of proprietary software: The Upgrade Cycle. Whenever a new version of the product is released, its users can decide if the want to upgrade.

Now, because it is customary to end support for an earlier version of a product some time after a new one has been released, this decision is not a real one. Instead the customer is ‘helped along’ by deliberate little incompatibilities that make it just a little easier to use the current version than the old one.

A very nice example is provided by Microsoft with its ‘Office’ line of products. Nearly every version has been incompatible with its predecessor and to avoid these annoyances companies upgrade and consumers get the new version from that friend that always gives them copied software.

This of course, besides being an annoyance causes corporate IT departments a lot of work ( I know, I’ve worked in one) and prevents them from having any kind of long-term strategy. They are slugging along the (death) march of the upgrade cycle and are forced to spend money on software, hardware and manpower while dancing to the manufacturers beat.

There are of course gradual differences. If you look at commercial UNIXes that are being supported for decades it’s a whole different thing. But the problem doesn’t lie in the duration of the support. The customer should get to decide how long he will use a particular system. If you want to keep using your old fleet of company vans because you like the way they look, you can just pay a car mechanic to keep them running for you. Sure parts are going to be harder to find as time goes by but it’s just a question of how much you’re prepared to spend. The point is that YOU get to make a real decision.

The proprietary software industry is one where the customer definitely is not king.

Langsam dämmerte es mir, dass dies wohl kein Tipp- sondern tatsächlich ein Rechtschreibfehler ist. Da frage ich mich doch für welche Notsituation sich die Verfasser der ebay-Angebote diese Books vorschlägt.

Einen, der den Vogel abschiesst gibt es ja immer. In diesem Fall ist es der ebay-Nutzer suchen-bieten-com, der sein ‘Dell Latitude CPX H - Nootebook’ [LINK] als ‘Perfectes Office - Laptop’ anpreist.

In einem wilden Ritt, im Zuge dessen weder auf Groß- und Kleinschreibung, noch auf sprachliche Ästhetik (’Schaniere und Verschluss Top’) Rücksicht genommen wird, prügelt der Autor den Leser durch die mannigfaltigen Vorzüge dieses Traumgeräts.

• ‘eine Ausdauertest hat mit Bravur bestanden’
• ‘Nootebook Tasche , in der Platz für Drucker und Nootebook ist’
• Kabel und Netzteil, die jedoch ’seperat eingepackt werden’ müssen.
• Eine kostenlose Software zur Virenabwehr, deren ‘Lizens jederzeit verlängert werden kann’. (??)

Selbst eine technologische Weltneuheit darf in diesem Paket nicht fehlen: So verspricht suchen-bieten-com eine ‘Dell Reperatur CD im PDF Format’ mitzuliefern; eine bemerkenswerte Seltenheit.

I hold a firm belief in the fact that in the end Open Source will prevail over proprietary software and standards that lock in users and hinder innovation. But wouldn’t it be nice to how far along we are?

So I thought of making a scoring scheme by which one would analyze a number of RSS feeds and use the resulting score to form an index that shows how the current stream of news reflects the epic struggle for an open society.

I was thinking of including 4 feeds in this index:

• ZDNET
• Slashdot
• The Register
• heise News (in my eyes the best tech news site, albeit being mostly in German)

The scoring scheme itself need some work but I find it an interesting idea.

The zealots issue (He writes about how Linux zealots install Linux on unsuspecting users’ PCs only for theM to find out later that there is no Photoshop on Linux and they can’t play their Windows games.)

I consider myself a Linux envangelist (I don’t like the term zealot). I have installed Linux for a number of people. I told them before that it is a new OS and that some things won’t work the way they do on Windows. And honestly: Does ‘Joe User’ (as Vangelis calls the average user) REALLY USE Photoshop? And even if he does use it, what are the chances that he is just using it to crop a picture or change the saturation in one every once in a while. YOU DON’T NEED PHOTOSHOP FOR THAT! And since it is probably pirated anyway, I might be doing someone like that a favour.

Playing the current Windows games is the only (!) reason why a home user might still want to have windows. If you don’t tell people about that before installing Linux for them, you are being a plain asshole.
Which Linux ??? (Vangelis goes on about it being difficult to publish software for the different Linux versions or package formats.)

He apparently hasn’t heard about Autopackage [link]. I have installed several programs using this system and it worked flawlessly. As a software vendor you CAN use it to distribute proprietary software across many distributions:

The licensing of autopackage is suitable for proprietary software vendors to use (LGPL).

Another point he makes is about a network admin who is happy he ‘learned SuSe’ and then has to work with RedHat and is completely lost. I am not even going to go into that because it is too ridiculous. What network admin DOESN’T know Linux?? And show me one network admin that would have a problem for more than a few minutes because he encounters some GUI-Tools that he isn’t used to.

Bad Marketing

He cites the Fedora Wiki:

“Fedora Core may not be appropriate for use in business-critical applications in your organization�?. 99% of people translate it to: “Find something else, this one is a risk.”

Although I can’t find this particular passage in the Fedora Wiki, I am sure it is massively out of context. I am willing to bet that one of the following sentences reads along the lines of: “If you are looking for a professionally supported business server operating system, you might want to take a look at some of RedHats products. While Fedora is built on mostly the same components and hence shares most characteristics, it focuses more on providing the latest software than you would probably want in an OS for a business-critical server.”

And 99% of people reading the Fedora wiki will understand the cited statement the right way anyway.

“Forum Rage” and the million config files (He claims Linux users in forums are not being helpful enough to Linux newbies and that fixing problems by changing config files is not desirable, because you will have to do it again if you reinstall your system.)

And as for the config files. Don’t even go there. I’ll just say one word: Registry. When you reinstall windows, your settings are usually wiped. Only in rare cases can you convince a program to use it’s old settings. This has mainly to do with the fact that Windows apps are installed all over the place and every single one handles its settings differently (this bit in the USER part of the registry, this bit in a file, this bit int eh LOCAL MACHINE part of the registry). It is virtually impossible to really back up your settings. Which is why MS specifically created a program that collects the settings of MS Office so you can move them. It is ridiculous. On my system I just take my home directory and all my settings are there. And if I want to save the configuration of my tediously tweaked machine I can still make a backup of my /etc directory and restore stuff from there.

Fast release cycles (He complains that upgrading your system twice a year is too much work for ‘Joe User’ and that you don’t want to ‘risk’ your tweaked system in an upgrade. He then compares it to Windows and mentions that it has been MS’ primary OS for 5 years and that this time span allowed users to get used to the interface etc.)

You can’t be serious. Have you even once tried upgrading a debian-based distribution? You generally don’t have to do anything! Just start the upgrade and apt does the rest for you. In rare cases you lose a special hand-tweaked setting here and there but chances are that the distribution has improved in a way that renders your tweaks unnecessary.

And please don’t compare it to upgrading Windows because there is no comparison. With Windows you can be happy if only two or three programs stop working after you upgrade the system. Do you think because MS doesn’t give you anything new for 5 years, it’s a bad idea? You get new features with every upgrade, your settings will still be there and you don’t have to reinstall your programs.

In fact, upgrading you system with apt can in most cases (certainly in ‘Joe Users’ case) be done over your lunch break (given a reasonable internet connection): Start the upgrade, go eat something, come back and continue working. If the upgrade was large (new kernel version for example) you might want to reboot to enjoy the full benefits. Compare that to ANY Windows upgrade you have ever done.

He finishes by saying:

So people, please don’t complain about windows that suck and all that stuff. You know that practically there’s nothing else out there.

I beg to differ: I know that practically there’s the visually sweet MacOS, which is not configurable enough for my liking and the mind-blowing Ubuntu Linux. I have also tested other flavours but Ubuntu suited me best and the community around it is awesome. I have been 100% Linux (no Windows on any of my computers) for over a year now and I am neither ‘Joe User’ nor an expert hacker. I am just someone who spends a lot of time on the computer working, coding, surfing, im-ing, mailing and so on.

What I don’t spend my time on anymore:

• virus scans
• upgrading my virus scanner
• spyware/malware scans
• upgrading my spyware/malware scanner
• installing my system every half year because it’s gone unbearably slow
• going crazy about files that can’t be deleted because ‘they are being used by another programme’
• defragmenting my hard drive
• searching for some ‘freeware’ tool to do something or other
• wondering who knows where I surf and what music I listen to
• worrying if my firewall is really on

Trotz Unterstützung durch einen ehemaligen Mitarbeiter der Bild (konnte wahrscheinlich Ihre Wahlkampfthemen einfach gut rüberbringen) verloren Sie und gingen beleidigt zurück nach Bayern. Alle atmeten auf.

DIE K-FRAGE

Nachdem der Gerd angesichts eines besseren Angebots aus Russland seinen Job als Bundeskanzler aufgeben wollte, konnten Sie es sich nicht verkneifen der Tante Angie aus dem Osten noch mal ein bisschen in den Blümchenkaffee zu spucken. Sie ließen sich als potenziellen Kanzlerkandidaten hochjubeln und und gingen allen mit der K-Frage gehörig auf die Eier. Was haben wir gelacht als Sie nach wochenlangem Gelaber in jedes Mikrofon, das nicht schnell genug auf dem Baum war, endlich von der Angie einen links und einen rechts verpult bekommen haben und sich brav mit dem Wirtschaftsministerium begnügen wollten. Das wurde dann auch nichts, Sie gaben vor, sich mit Frau Schavan nicht über den Zuschnitt des Ministeriums in Bezug auf Forschung einigen zu können (höhö) , und zogen abermals ab nach Bayern.

Nun hatten wir uns langsam daran gewöhnt dass Sie ab und zu ohne ersichtlichen Grund in Berlin auftauchen, was belangloses sagen, sich dann wieder hinter der Weißwurstäquator verziehen und ansonsten keine Ärger machen. Denn letztendlich sind Sie immer nur ein bayerischer Fels in der bundespolitischen Brandung geblieben. Unbeweglich und öfter mal unter Wasser. Wären Sie mal einfach in Bayern geblieben und hätten intelligentere Leute beschäftigt. Da hätte man Sie wahrscheinlich sogar nochmal gewählt.

I as a Linux user have a mixed opinion when it comes to Vista. On the one hand, it will be a huge boost for Linux. Considering the horrendous costs for licences and hardware upgrades and the comparatively low gain in features, more people will be looking for alternatives. And since you can get a 3D desktop running on half the graphics power in Linux [link], there is an incentive to switch. I won’t even start about viruses, spyware, security, etc..

On the other hand, Vista is another big drive to close up technologies, make users dependent and take away choice. The unholy alliance between the movie studios, recording industry and Microsoft is pushing hard to turn computers into ‘content delivery systems’, i.e. TVs with a keyboard.

That this is not simply an analogy, made up by me to scare you, is illustrated in this passage:

This is done through a “constrictor” that downgrades the signal to a much lower-quality one, then up- scales it again back to the original spec, but with a significant loss in quality. In his final thoughts Gutmann attempts to identify the motive behind this focus on ‘content protection by Microsoft.

At the end of all this, the question remains: Why is Microsoft going to this much trouble? Ask most people what they picture when you use the term “premium-content media player” and they’ll respond with “A PVR” or “A DVD player” and not “A Windows PC”. So why go to this much effort to try and turn the PC into something that it’s not?

In July 2006, Cory Doctorow published an analysis of the anti-competitive nature of Apple’s iTunes copy-restriction system which looked at the benefits of restrictive DRM for the company that controls the DRM. The only reason I can imagine why Microsoft would put its programmers, device vendors, third-party developers, and ultimately its customers, through this much pain is because once this copy protection is entrenched, Microsoft will completely own the distribution channel. In the same way that Apple has managed to acquire a monopolistic lock-in on their music distribution channel […], so Microsoft will totally control the premium-content distribution channel. Not only will they be able to lock out any competitors, but because they will then represent the only available distribution channel they’ll be able to dictate terms back to the content providers whose needs they are nominally serving in the same way that Apple has already dictated terms back to the music industry: Play by Apple’s rules, or we won’t carry your content. The result will be a technologically enforced monopoly that makes their current de-facto Windows monopoly seem like a velvet glove in comparison.

Quite a bleak outlook. I hope the market share of alternative operating systems grows in a way that forces hardware manufacturers to play attention to them.

Was mich wirklich beeindruckt hat, ist das Parteiprogramm [link]. Auf nur neun Seiten werden wirklich wichtige und oft unterschätzte Probleme der Wissensgesellschaft angesprochen. Besonders lesenswert ist folgender Absatz über Kopierschutz etc.:

Systeme, welche auf einer technischen Ebene die Vervielfältigung von Werken be- oder verhindern (”Kopierschutz”, “DRM”, usw.), verknappen künstlich deren Verfügbarkeit, um aus einem freien Gut ein wirtschaftliches zu machen. Die Schaffung von künstlichem Mangel aus rein wirtschaftlichen Interessen erscheint uns unmoralisch, daher lehnen wir diese Verfahren ab.
Darüber hinaus behindern sie auf vielfältige Art und Weise die berechtigte Nutzung von Werken, erschaffen eine vollkommen inakzeptable Kontrollierbarkeit und oft auch Überwachbarkeit der Nutzer und gefährden die Nutzung von Werken durch kommende Generationen, denen der Zugang zu den heutigen Abspielsystemen fehlen könnte.
Zusätzlich stehen die gesamtwirtschaftlichen Kosten für die Etablierung einer lückenlosen und dauerhaft sicheren Kopierschutzinfrastruktur im Vergleich zu ihrem gesamtwirtschaftlichen Nutzen in einem extremen Missverhältnis. Die indirekten Folgekosten durch erschwerte Interoperabilität bei Abspielsystemen und Software erhöhen diese Kosten weiter.

Wahre Worte. Statt die verlust- und praktisch kostenfreie (digitale) Vervielfältigung von Information als wirtschaftliche Bedrohung zu sehen, müssen wir diese, in der Geschichte der Menschheit noch nie dagewesene Möglichkeit, endlich als riesige gesellschaftliche Chance begreifen.

Ebenfalls interessant:

Wirtschaftlicher Erfolg ist in der Informationsgesellschaft zunehmend nicht mehr von technischen Erfindungen, sondern von Wissen und Information und deren Erschließung abhängig. Das Bestreben, diese Faktoren nun ebenso mittels des Patentsystems zu regulieren, steht unserer Forderung nach Freiheit des Wissens und Kultur der Menschheit diametral entgegen.

Wir lehnen Patente auf Lebewesen und Gene, auf Geschäftsideen und auch auf Software einhellig ab, weil sie unzumutbare und unverantwortliche Konsequenzen haben, weil sie die Entwicklung der Wissensgesellschaft behindern, weil sie gemeine Güter ohne Gegenleistung und ohne Not privatisieren und weil sie kein Erfindungspotential im ursprünglichen Sinne besitzen. Die gute Entwicklung klein- und mittelständischer IT-Unternehmen in ganz Europa hat beispielsweise gezeigt, dass auf dem Softwaresektor Patente völlig unnötig sind.

An der Diskussion um Softwarepatente nehmen leider zu wenig Menschen teil, die wissen, was Quellcode ist. Ein Patent auf Software ist wie ein Patente auf eine Methode ein Küchenmesser festzuhalten. Die Absurdität von Softwarepatente zeigen eindrucksvoll die Nominierte für das Softwarepatent des Jahres auf nosoftwarepatents-award.com.

Besonders humorige Beispiele:

Dieses Parteiprogramm hat mich doch gleich mal veranlasst, der Partei beizutreten, denn es ist das erste Parteiprogramm, welches ich vom ersten bis zum letzten Wort unterschreiben kann. (Mir ist bewusst, dass dies sicher auch am eingeschränkten Themenspektrum liegt.)
